6/17/2023 0 Comments Hue and cry london![]() There's a lot of coincidences and conveniences along the way, but one must be conscious this is a movie pitched at kids, so on that level it works, and there is that satisfaction for young folks where smart children defeat scheming adults who only think they're being clever. He gets together with his neighbourhood chums, and starts investigating, including going to the stories' author (a small but memorable role for Alastair Sim). ![]() The plot involves an inquisitive youngster, Joe working out that a gang of crooks are using stories printed in a children's magazine to plan their crimes. I know Blyton is deeply unfashionable and controversial to talk about nowadays (and she's been the victim of cancel culture since the 1970s so was a real trend-setter in that regard), but I grew up reading mum's old Blyton novels and it never adversely affected me, so as usual the self-declared guardians of morality have no idea what they're talking about. Think of it as Enid Blyton meets The Third Man (1949). Clarke who was indeed responsible for some of the finest Ealing comedies, however this is more a thriller for children. So there was plenty of movement, shouting and plotting going on in the foreground, but as someone who has twice visited and is fascinated by the history of London, I spent more time savouring the backgrounds.Ī product of Ealing Studios often mislabeled as one of their comedies. Hue and Cry certainly has its strengths as lively paced boy's own adventure, but the main interest for viewers nowadays lies in the extensive location photography of post-war London, full of all the bombing scars from The Blitz and the later V1 and V2 rocket attacks. I've mentioned before how in addition to all the other pleasures they can offer, films can also function as an incidental time capsule, preserving transitory states now lost forever.
